K-3 Media and Manipulation of Materials
Throughout the school year, students in kindergarten paint, color, draw, make prints with apples
and found materials, and work with clay. Activities are related to books, characters, the alphabet and things happening in
their world. They learn about using different media , working safely, taking responsibility for cleaning their own work area,
and respecting others work.
First grade art expands upon the skills learned in kindergarten. Materials are used
with more control and skill. Media is combined to give the students a broader experience. Responsibility for materials, their
own behavior and respect for others continues to play an important part of the learning that takes place in the classroom.
Second grade projects include making a log cabin when they study pioneers. They explore colors and mixing and
become more confident with the use of a variety of tools and materials. Shape, line, color and form become familiar words
as students learn about the elements they use in their art work. Giant flowers are painted when students are introduced to
American painter, Georgia O'Keeffe.
Third grade learns about 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional art. During
the New Year, they make Chinese dragons to celebrate the traditions of another culture. The work of famous artists are explored
in our society. Students make Picasso faces, Monet watercolors ,Van Gogh starry nights and and Mondrian maps. A favorite
acitivity is making ceramic pumpkins for the Halloween season. 4-6
Exploration of artists and cultures Fourth grade students begin to explore the world of
various cultures. Countries of the world become more familiar as the arts and crafts of their ancestor's homes are discovered.
Northern Europe, Africa, South America, and the Netherlands are just a few of the areas that might be included. Each year
is an exciting journey to their ancestor's homeland.
Fifth grader explore the traditions of Native Americans
of North America. The Navajo, Pueblo, Sioux, Apache, Inuit and Ioway are a few of the tribes explored. All regions feature
a tribe from that North American area. Students learn about their reverence for the earth and how that was and continues
to be expressed through native arts and crafts.
Sixth graders' art and social studies units are closely
aligned. Ancient Egypt, China, and India are studied, as well as Asia and the Middle East. Arts that are part of the tradition
of those cultures are explored. During their Iowa history unit, they learn about Grant Wood, our own most famous artist, and
create a landscape in a similar style.
