Accelerated Readers

Students  in grades 2 through 5 participate in the Accelerated Reader program. All quizzes that have been written are available for our students as they read the books. Each grade level has determined their own certification levels which are: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum. Tier 2 includes Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire, and Diamond. A third tier has been created this school year for stellar readers. The Star levels are Orion, Little Dipper, Big Dipper and Polaris , the North Star. As students achieve each level, a certificate is presented to them and medals are awarded at the end of the school year for the highest level of achievement.

Learn how to be effective users of information by asking such questions as: "Where do I find what I need to answer my question? How do I use this resource in the most efficient way? Is it good information? Does it answer my question? What is the best way to present the information that I find? "

Units are developed through collaboration with classroom teachers and the teacher librarian. These units integrate library skills into the teacher's classroom curriculum through research-based projects that take place in the media center. The research emphasizes using resources that are in the collection in the library., but that are also available from the community as a whole, from other libraries, and the Internet.

Learning that has meaning for students does not take place in isolation. Skills learned in the library/media center that have no relationship to what the students are engaged in are soon forgotten. When students come to the media center with a purpose, i.e. to find good information that will help them answer the questions they have developed in their classrooms, they will remember the process of finding that information. The process carries over to other real life situations when students are looking for a variety of answers to their personal questions.

Children in grades Pre-K-5

Children in grades Pre-K-6 have scheduled check out once each six days. Appreciation for books and reading for pleasure is encouraged. They become acquainted with a variety of award winning authors and illustrators . Students in grades 2-5 participate in the Accelerated Reader program.

Our elementary students develop skills in using the online catalog and web databases. They learn where print materials are located in the library and how to access them. Technology is increasingly used in the library/media center at lower grade levels. Print as well as non-print formats and the Internet are used to introduce students to special places, character, or stories. Web 2.0 tools which are interactive reading  and writing projects, will be increasingly used as student experience 21st century technology.
